Can you Identify Birds?

Well, the hawks have found the bird feeder.

I was working at the computer yesterday when I heard all the little birds making a great racket. I went outside cautiously to see what was happening and this hawk flew over to the neighbor's fence.

These were the best shots I could get. (I want a camera that can take REAL close-up shots for Christmas!)

Judging by the length of the white wood I would say he was about 15 inches -- I couldn't see his tail.

My best guess is that he is a young Cooper's hawk. We get a lot of them round here.

What do you think?

Oh Chris ~~ I hope my birdseed doesn't attract hawks. When we lived up north I had to keep Molly inside for a while because we got some hawks that look at her like "mmm nice lunch"

The pictures are great, especially the last one.

Hi Wanda: I don't know how near you are to shrub or grassland, but honestly coyotes are the worst enemies of cat and small dogs round here -- not to mention rattle snakes. We don't live on the edge of town, but there are long wide grass verges that come in from fields further away. We have possums and raccoons in yards around us. I haven't seen any raccoons for a few years, but my friend who lives just half a mile away says they have a raccoon in their back yard. And we both have houses all around us. There used to be some skunks too, but not lately. Sorry to be so worrying. I'm no expert but I would always have someone out side when she is outside and have an old baseball bat handy! But coyotes are mostly seen at night or early morning.

I LOVE it. Beautiful Pictures. I remember all the Hawks in the Temecula Valley. ... Our school teams in Murietta were named for a few.. Night Hawk? Red Hawks? I rarely saw any of them. I Love your photos.

Nope, no hawks around here either. I like the pictures but I can imagine some extreme close ups. Don't forget to write that letter to Santa Claus for Christmas.

Not that I am a bird expert, by any means, but judging by his wings he may be a falcon. I believe all hawks (in Canada anyway) have the blunt edged wings; your bird seems to have pointed wings. He does look very much like the Peregrine Falcon in my bird book, or the Merlin, which is quite a bit smaller.

This morning I was awake early, and since the weather was nice, I sat out on the patio with my cup of tea (6:00am) -- I heard more new bird calls than I ever have before. I wonder if there is a web-site somewhere, where you can listen to the sounds they make, to identify birds by?

We have lots of hawks but I don't recognize that one. Perhaps a young red tailed hawk.

It looks like a young coopers hawk in the last picture. We had them all winter but none this summer. Strange.

Nice photos.
