J IS FOR...

J IS FOR ...JET STREAM
The large red and blue arrow in the photo above represents the jet stream.  The fluffy white stuff is exactly that, fluffy white stuff -- snow.  From that picture above you might think we get snow in San Diego.  Of course we don't -- but the mountains do -- sometimes down to 2,000 feet.

This is when our friends in the Midwest should be alert, for when that jet stream has done its dirty work in San Diego, it charges across the midlands spawning wild weather and tornadoes within a day or so after visiting San Diego.
Yesterday I wrote on my blog that the Midwest would probably get tornadoes soon and sure enough they did get some today.  Fortunately they did not touch down in populated area.

The Jet Stream is what seems to influence our weather here in San Diego.  Under normal conditions it blows fairly straight across the Northern States and Canada from east to west.  But every now and then it dives down to San Diego, does a hairpin turn and charges back up towards the Great Lakes.  When that happens our weatherman tells us "the storm door is open."  Then all the 'cold' air swoops down upon us. Usually around the fifties and maybe forties at night.

I know that's not very cold winter weather compared to what most people get, but you have to feel a little sorry for us.  Our house in particular and therefore a hundred or so others like ours around us, have no insulation in them.  And there are holes in the walls and under the sink where pipes and electricity comes in from the out side.  In fact we had to plug all the holes we could find with steel wool just to keep the mice out in the fall.  Believe me this was not an inexpensive house.  That's the way they build them down here.

There is much more to learn about the jet stream, so start with Wikkipedia  and find out more.
NOW LET ME INTRODUCE YOU TO MY NEXT  'J'

This is JOHN -- JOHN COLEMAN to be exact.
John Coleman is our weatherman.  He has been delivering weather forecasts for about fifty years.  He moved down here to 'retire'. At first we did not like him.  He's a bit of a clown and a silly one at that.  But soon we discovered that his forecasts were the most accurate of all the TV weathermen - and women- in our area.  So we got used to the nonsense and learned a lot about weather.

Interestingly enough, he has first class credentials and was also the co-founder of the Weather Channel.  He's not averse to a little controversy either.  You should see what he says about global warming.  He has some very interesting information about that, and since he does come well qualified, he deserves a hearing.

THIS IS WHAT HE HAS TO SAY;
"It is the greatest scam in history. I am amazed, appalled and highly offended by it. Global Warming; It is a SCAM. Some dastardly scientists with environmental and political motives manipulated long term scientific data to create in [sic] allusion of rapid global warming. Other scientists of the same environmental whacko type jumped into the circle to support and broaden the "research" to further enhance the totally slanted, bogus global warming claims. Their friends in government steered huge research grants their way to keep the movement going. Soon they claimed to be a consensus.

Environmental extremists, notable politicians among them, then teamed up with movie, media and other liberal, environmentalist journalists to create this wild "scientific" scenario of the civilization threatening environmental consequences from Global Warming unless we adhere to their radical agenda. Now their ridiculous manipulated science has been accepted as fact and become a cornerstone issue for CNN, CBS, NBC, the Democratic Political Party, the Governor of California, school teachers and, in many cases, well informed but very gullible environmental conscientious citizens. Only one reporter at ABC has been allowed to counter the Global Warming frenzy with one 15 minutes documentary segment.
[...]
I have read dozens of scientific papers. I have talked with numerous scientists. I have studied. I have thought about it. I know I am correct. There is no run away climate change. The impact of humans on climate is not catastrophic. Our planet is not in peril. I am incensed by the incredible media glamour, the politically correct silliness and rude dismissal of counter arguments by the high priest of Global Warming.
In time, a decade or two, the outrageous scam will be obvious."

No comment from me on this hot topic, (no pun intended!)

This is my entry for the letter J in ABC WEDNESDAY,  an exceptionally long running meme with many participants and loads of interesting information.  Click HERE to see what I mean.

Is that same jet stream responsible for our glorious weather this week?

Jane and Chris: I don't know. Sorry. I only watch the weather as it pertains to us. But it probably does. There is a lot of interesting info on Google.

Hmm, I think I will stay out of the Global warming fray too.( I think I agree with John)
We had and have cold weather here in Sacramento area, with lots of rain and finally snow in our mountains. I think we then sent it to you and onward on the Jet Stream.
Great post and very original post for the letter J.

We've been getting colder weather than normal lately, too. While in the East, people are out in shorts and sandals! Something has gone completely backwards. Have a jolly week, Chris! :D

Good post for the J day. So informative, and I enjoyed reading all of it!

Interesting post about the jet stream. As far as Coleman's take on climate change, I think of myself as mild and moderate but by his definition I guess I just found out I'm an environmental extremist. I hope you're having a great week! Carver, ABC Wednesday Team

Yes, folks with no insulation will suffer with cool nights.

I disagree strongly with your weather guy, but then you already knew that, I suspect.

As a native of Illinois, I'm well aware of the jetstream—AND John Coleman! I vividly remember his weather forecasts when he was in Chicago, and while he wasn't my favourite, I didn't mind him as much as others did. Still, I know that now I wouldn't watch him because of his opinion on climate change which, like Roger, I vehemently disagree with.

All that aside, I find your posts really interesting!

What a JUICY post this week. I love San Diego!!! Can't imagine it being so cold - even in winter and I know exactly what you're saying about the mountains. COOL weatherman too!

Have a great week!

We were just out in California, SFBay area, and it was cold and rainy the whole time we were there, meanwhile it was 83 back here at home.
Interesting about the Global Warming, I can remember back in the 70's when climatologists assured us that we were heading into another ice age.

I'm in the Midwest and were getting inundated with lots of rain this week. My grass and new spring blooms are enjoying it. Great J example.

I do not know what is going on with our weather here in Ohio where we live. We had a spring-like winter with no snow. We had only three days of freezing temperatures and usually have three months of freezing temps. We are now, today, experiencing 83 degree temperatures. Hot like August and has been for the past several days. We expect it to cool down by the weekend to the 60s but even that will set a new record. All of our winter weather records were broken by warming temps. And the same seems to be true for the month of March.

Such a great and interesting post, Chris. I remember listening to John Coleman- a bit off-the-wall, but interesting!

I rather like John Coleman's take on global warming, but then I am somewhat suspicious of so-called science these days. Bet it doesn't feel like global warming where you live!

That wonderful jet stream has brought summer to the eastern portion of the US. We had temps in the 80's today. Tomorrow is my birthday and it seems I vaguely recall a childhood birthday with this type of weather. I am sorry for the trouble it is causing you.

Interesting post.
The Jet stream is doing unusual things both sides of the Atlantic. For us it is preventing rainfall and giving us unusually warm weather. I agree with John Coleman on the politics of Global Warming, it is a wonderful means of raising taxes, but I think the evidence something is happening is not so easy to dismiss. However, the jury is still out on what is responsible, is it manmade or a natural cycle?
