S is for SPIRE

S is for SPIRE

This is the crooked spire of St. Mary's Anglican Church in Chesterfield, Derbyshire, UK  It is said to lean at a 45 degree angle and does so for two probable reasons:
1.  The workmen were not sufficiently skilled.
2,  The wood they used was un-seasoned and therefore warped.

This is the Same Spire in Silhouette:

The next photo is in honor of  Sergeant Major, Ed Billups, who celebrated his 80th birthday this week, having served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean and Viet Nam wars:

and he can still get into his dress blues!
Happy Birthday, Ed!

One more Spire, made more Spectacular by the Sky behind it:

The Cathedral of the Rockies in Boise, Idaho.

Or you can have Sweet dreams about this Spider:

On display in the Nature Center, in Carlsbad.

That crooked spire sure looked interesting, but I do hope it won't collapse in the future.

I have two entries for ABC Wednesday, you can check it out HERE and HERE. Hope you could check it out, thank you so much! Happy mid-week to you.

Great collection of S Words. That first spire is crazy. Its sure a conversation piece.
Pretty good that Ed can still fit in his uniform.
I ordered a blogbook from your link. It should be here by June 15. I can't wait. I did the entire 2009 to the present.

That spire impressed me. Someone must have done quite a bit of maintenance to prevent it from falling down.

Gosh Chris! I love your posts. Happy 80th to Ed (he looks marvelous in his uniform!). That church spire rather aggravates me. You would think they would have fixed it!! LOL

I'm glad that spider is fake.

On behalf of the ABC Wed., thanks for paticipating.

I am almost willing to believe that the spire was meant to be that way. Even in the very old days when machinery was not something workers had they came out with beautiful structures. In any case I think that its look adds character.

What a beautiful piece of architecture, the spire!

And it must be coold to have the spider lying around at home, it's a cool piece of work! :D

I think I prefer Sweets to Spiders they taste much better.
Who was the philistine who wanted St Mary’s spire fixed? Please wash your mouth out! You don’t ‘fix’ 800-year-old buildings. You preserve them. I bet you want to straighten up the leaning tower of Pizza too!
Incidentally the best view of it is from inside the tower, it looks really weird, but the big mystery is why it stays up at all, there is nothing fixing it to the tower, it just sits on top and has done so for six centuries.

...and I would think that another reason the spire is still crooked is that it's a great tourist attraction :)

Great S's, Chris -- always enjoy your ABC Wednesday posts!

Shock!! Horror!! You mean that the story about the devil coming down in the night to twist the spire isn't really true??!! ;-)x

Spooky Spider, might make you jump lurking in the corner. I like the crooked spire against the lamppost. The Devil has a lot to answer for.

The crooked spire might be one of the most unusual architectural features I've seen in a long time! I really like it. Does that mean I'm a little bent? :) The spider sculpture would make a great garden deterrent.
