D IS FOR....

......DAPPLED THINGS
Trying to think of something special for the letter --
this week, I couldn't get the phrase "dappled things" out of my mind.  It had popped up from my High School English class from about 55 years ago.  So I looked up Gerard Manley Hopkins on Google (at least I remembered the name of the poet!) and there it was -- "Pied Beauty".

 Pied Beauty
         Glory be to God for dappled things—
        For skies of couple-colour as a brinded cow;
            For rose-moles all in stipple upon trout that swim;
    Fresh-firecoal chestnut-falls; finches' wings;
        Landscape plotted and pieced—fold, fallow, and plough;
            And áll trades, their gear and tackle and trim.

    All things counter, original, spáre, strange;
        Whatever is fickle, frecklèd (who knows how?)
            With swíft, slów; sweet, sóur; adázzle, dím;
    He fathers-forth whose beauty is pást change:
                                            Práise Hím.
By Gerard Manley Hopkins

Here are some "dappled things" from among my photos

Look around you.  You'll be surprised how many dappled things there are.  Anyone
got freckles?  Then you're one of them!

I don't think dappled is a word you hear much in use nowadays but it is a good choice for ABC Wednesday.

I am totally dappled in freckles. I never thought of it that way!

Cute post, and yes I still have a few freckles leftover from being a readhead.

Your drawing of the D is so nice, you should do that for all the letters.

Wish you were in my watercolor class. Having a lot of fun.

'Dappled' is such a lovely word, isn't it? I like your capital D - very attractive. I love to walk through trees in dappled light.

I love that word, 'dappled', Chris,and as Snafu says, not so often used nowadays. Whatever happened to dappled horses and dappled grey skies?

It's like 'fawn'! When I was young everybody wore fawn socks, but now all the fawn socks seem to have disappeared!

Very clever choice for today! I enjoyed seeing your dappled examples and am glad to know a new poet.
Enjoy your week, be it dappled or not.

"landscapes plotted and pieced" is one of my favorite phrases from that poem--perhaps because I "piece" quilts?

Forgot to say, I especially love your dappled orchids!
